Inspiration Porn: A followup

A friend and I were talking shortly after my last “Inspiration Porn” post and she told me that she didn’t know what to comment other than “you’re inspirational”. I want to make it clear, you can call a disabled person an inspiration, just don’t do it in a way that focuses on the disability instead of the person, or in a way that makes it seem that they are doing something despite their disability, or in a way that objectifies us.

Think of it this way, if you wouldn’t tell another able-bodied that they’re inspirational for doing it, don’t tell the disabled person that they’re inspirational for doing it. If you wouldn’t tell an able-bodied person that they are inspirational for using their voice, don’t say it. If its not inspirational for two able-bodied people to go to prom together, leave it alone. If its not an inspiration for an able-bodied person to go to the store, ignore the fact that they are doing it.

Telling a disabled person that they are an inspiration is okay, as long as it is said in the right way. If you want to tell me that I’m inspirational for writing this blog, I’ll accept it. If you’re telling me that I’m inspirational because I’m writing this blog despite my disabilities…I’ll gladly tell you where to shove it.
